Discover the Magic of Nature with Young Rangers!

A Forest School Journey That Inspires Growth, Confidence, and Creativity

Welcome to Young Rangers, the heart of Random's Retreat’s outdoor learning adventures. Led by the passionate and experienced Honor Shaw, our programme embraces the Forest School ethos, a child-centred approach that nurtures self-esteem, creativity, and independence through hands-on experiences in nature.

What is Young Rangers?

Young Rangers is a long-term outdoor education programme for 4 - 11 yr olds that thrives on the principles of Forest School. It’s about more than just spending time in the woods—it’s about holistic, learner-led development that supports children in:

  • Taking healthy risks and learning to manage them.
  • Problem-solving and discovering their unique abilities.
  • Connecting with the natural world in meaningful ways.

Through activities like building dens, caring for animals, exploring woodlands, and creating woodland projects, children are given the tools to grow and thrive—all while having fun!

The Young Rangers Story

It all began in 2018 when a chance conversation sparked the idea of bringing outdoor learning to Random's Retreat. What started as a trial of small sessions with friends and family quickly grew into something incredible. By 2019, we officially launched Young Rangers with a summer campout weekend, where children experienced the magic of teamwork, campfires, and woodland exploration.

Since then, we’ve grown exponentially. From 9 participants in 2019 to 40+ members in 2024, our programme has become a beloved staple for children in the community. With the dedication of our leaders, including Honor Shaw and Racheal Milor, who are both certified Level 3 Forest School Facilitators, and support workers the children who attend thrive with their leadership and enthusiasm.
